Our Song of the Day is a gorgeous song from Newcastle Upon Tyne based Indie-folk outfit Suntrapp. ‘New Morning’ is a beautifully uplifting song that will lighten many a burdened awakening, you can almost feel that sunlight pouring in through the window.
Jake Houlsby’s penmanship and arrangements have an underlying sincerity that sets him apart as a great singer songwriter, it’s a great pleasure to feature him on Folk Radio UK:
We caught up with Jake Houlsby who shared this about the song:
I wrote New Morning, sporadically, over a two week period in July. It started off with just the guitar melody and I’d think up lyrics when I was in the car or walking around town. There was a lot of things going on at the time and I wanted to write something that would open me up to change, as oppose to run away from it all. The verses all just fell together quite easily and the chorus came at it’s own pace.
After recording it at The Roundhouse for their 30/30 Project, I designed a front cover that was inspired by their logo. It wasn’t until a month before the release, when I was coming back from Amsterdam, that I saw a Van Gogh painting titled ‘Harvest’ and thought it fitted the track much better that what I’d already come up with. It reminded me of the big field across the road from where I grew up and everything that was in my mind whilst writing the song so I redesigned the cover with that instead.
The release will be followed by a very special Hub Session at The Roundhouse Rising Festival on February 21st, alongside previous 30/30 contributor Ajimal.
