This year will mark 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War, a war which cost the life of millions. The Centenary will form the focus of a new project from Sam Lee which is funded by the Imperial War Museums’ Centenary Partnership Programme and Sound UK. Sam and his band have been unearthing the folk songs and stories from four rural communities at the time of the First World War. They met with local people, song collectors and historians as part of their research into the folk songs and traditions that would have been in the hearts and minds of soldiers as they went to war.
Along with fellow fellow multi-instrumentalists Nico Brown, Cosmo Sheldrake, Gwendolen Chatfield and a number of special guests Sam will bring these songs and poems back to life as part of an exclusive première in a captivating evening of folk song, story-telling and more. The new show ‘Forever England: Song from the First World War’ will run from 20-23 February (details below) with a larger production coming in the Autumn with The Unthanks.
