It was only thanks to a holler on twitter about going to see Bill Callahan that I stumbled over the Thickets (no pun intended), a three-piece alternative-folk band from London. I gave them a quick listen and ended up staying for more…and wanting still more.
They state they are inspired by Nick Cave, PJ Harvey and Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan but I wasn’t expecting what I heard and I mean that in a really good way. Their sound has that psych-folk feel on the likes of the beautiful ‘Lullaby’ on which Rebecca Lavery transposes some incredible vocals. The range of music they offer is surprising for just cello, drums and autoharp…take a listen to Diana on which Allanah Secis’s cello and Kieran Lavery’s drums go into overdrive.
They also have a great mastery of harmony as Rebecca & Allanah demonstrate to great effect on Come Home. What really makes them shine is their inventiveness, reminiscent in places of The Moulettes but with a very fresh approach all of their own.
