We have a special treat today from Fiction, a five piece from London signed to Moshi Moshi Records. They recently got together with the wonderful Serafina Steer to perform a more intimate version of their song ‘The Apple (For Alan Turing)’. Watch the live session below.
The Apple is one of the earliest tracks we wrote for the album and has often been the final track in our live set. It tells the story of Alan Turing’s tragic demise after being found guilty of gross indecency with another man, when homosexuality was still a criminal offence in the UK. The judge gave him the choice between prison or chemical castration to ‘cure’ him. Opting for the latter, he was forced to take female growth hormones, which inevitably had a grave effect on his body and mind. Two years later he was found dead in his bedroom, with a half-eaten apple by his side.
We know Serafina Steer through Jacob (our drummer) and have become big fans of her work. Our original version of The Apple is rather loud and epic, so we wanted to try something more intimate and that’s when we got Serafina and her harp involved. She picked up the song very quickly and really made it her own. We’re really pleased with the results.
Fiction are performing this coming Sat 8th February:
