Marissa Nadler has revealed her new video for ‘Dead City Emily’ from her forthcoming new album and Bella Union debut July which hits the streets on Monday 10th February.
The new video for single ‘Dead City Emily’ is directed by Derrick Belcham:
On the video and song Nadler says…
“The song Dead City Emily details the ups and downs of years of a relationship through the protagonist’s conversation with a friend, who we will call Emily. The narrator confesses to her friend that her life has become one where all of the things that she used to love have lost their luster. She feels trapped in an eternally “Dead City”, haunted by the past and frozen in the present. It’s through these flashback sequences that director Derrick Belcham (who has recently worked with Sharon Van Etten & Julianna Barwick) captures the essence of this manic state of love and despair.
“The song deals with contrast, as does the video. The song begins with the line ” I was coming apart those days, I don’t give a damn about the way, colors on the trees, change from red to green, it’s a dead city emily.” That darkness, however, transforms, with a chorus that begins with the declaration, “oh, I saw the light today.” This realization of finding solace within love, and remembering all of the good times, is the core of this song. The hazy, reflected dreamlike sequences seek to capture the essence of memory. Under a deceptively melancholy veil is a bit of a positive message.”
