For Brighton’s Carrie Tree, 2013 was a landmark year, capped by a performance on the new 2000+ capacity William’s Green stage at Glastonbury Festival (along with bands like Alt-J and The Vaccines). In 2014, Carrie will release her new album Home To The Invisible on March 17th through Wild Cedar Records, preceded by new single Mama Kita.
Mama Kita was recorded Sussex UK, and in Durban, South Africa, at Headroom Studios and features the vocal talents of Albert Mazibuko from Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The track benefits from some traditional African instruments like Kora (African harp), Nyatiti, Djembe, Endingidi (traditional Ugandan tube fiddle) and also cello, fretless bass, guitar and percussion.
Talking of the track, Carrie says;
“The musicians were truly amazing to work with—very intuitive, heart-felt, and I love the rhythm of their vocals and the passion in which they sing. I first shared with them what the song meant to me (the celebration and quest of ‘coming home’―’home’ being the home inside ourselves) and they then wrote parts in their language to answer and support the story within it. Over the day of recording the studio was full of musicians and amazing characters coming in and out, adding to a big melting pot of creativity.
Mama Kita started as a simple melody on the guitar and always reminded me of something African in feel, seeing a sunny red-earthed land whenever I played it, so the vision for the video was to bring in the feeling of free-spirited journeying in a dream-like desert landscape. We wanted to evoke the imagination through simple close up imagery of beautiful nature, like leaves in sunlight, the guinea-fowl feather from South Africa, the flash of a red silk dress through green grass, the hint of someone walking through land, warm, bare footed, sandy ground, hazy summer skies… the feeling of discovering something beautiful. An oasis.”
