Cumbrian ballad singer Maz O’Connor has been garnering well-deserved praise from across the folk circuit with her contemporary take on both traditional songs as well as her own. Last year we chose her song Derby Day as a Song of the Day. It was commissioned by Broadstairs Folk Week for a concert commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of suffragette Emily Wilding-Davison, who died attempting to attach a Votes For Women scarf to the bridle of the kings horse at the 1913 Epsom Derby.
The song features on her forthcoming album This Willowed Light due out in Spring 2014, from which we have another taster below. Maz will be performing at Cecil Sharp House on 30th January when she will be joined by folk troubadours Jim Moray, Elly Lucas and multi-instrumentalist Rowan Rheingans of Lady Maisery. Following his she is performing a double headline bill tour with Jamie Smith’s Mabon (dates below)
