Cardboard Fox are a bluegrass (ish) band based in Bath and in case you’re thinking those two young women look familiar it is because they more than likely are…they are Laura and Charlotte Carrivick better known as acclaimed duo The Carrivick Sisters. Joining them is John Breese who some may recognise as the current banjo player with the highly regarded Coal Porters and some-time bassist with The Carrivick Sisters…and Joe Tozer who has won the EFDSS Young Musician Competition three times, giving him an opportunity to play at Cambridge Folk Festival and reaching the finals of the Bath Folk Festival New Shoots competition with his duo, Lost in the Honeycomb.
So they’re a talented bunch and they’re all now based in Bath finally which means we’re likely to be hearing a lot more from them. Where the genre ‘ish’ comes in is that their backgrounds are wide and varied from classical through to folk and roots and that gives them their edge something you can pick up in those sprightly flourishes that they make look so easy in the video below for High on a Mountain. The song was written by American Folk Singer Ola Belle Reed and has been recorded by the likes of by Del McCoury, Tim O’Brien, and Marty Stuart.
They promise to bring original writing and re-imagined folk songs taken from a very different perspective, one to keep your eyes and ears open for this year.
