Abbey Bowden is a young singer songwriter who is currently based in London. Although she studied music at university it wasn’t until after Uni that the musical penny dropped. Her music, if you were to label it, falls somewhere in the alternative, experimental side of indie folk but is by no means fenced in. Her use of guitar doesn’t mean that her head-space is not filled with bigger dramatic compositions, that comes at a cost! This is something she is all to familiar with since arriving in London about 18 months ago where the steeper rent means she has had to work harder at making a living as an artist. Whilst a lot of people fear the blinkered pedestrians charging around the city streets Abbey has found London to be an empowering experience, pushing herself beyond her usual limits which has been rewarded with nothing but encouragement and support.
Whilst Abbey plays some beautiful guitar, she’d be the first to admit she’s not a technical whizz on the fretboard…to be honest, she doesn’t need to be…it is her voice that wins hands down! When I heard her sing ‘Still’ I was moved beyond words which is why I’ve chosen it as our Song of the Day, it’s also a free download. She reels off Sigur Ros, Bon Iver, Patti Smith and Tom Odell as influences or artists she likes but she is vocally unique, when she hits those subdued high notes not a hair is left resting. This is a voice you will not forget!
Abbey also recently teamed up with photographer Sophia Kahlenberg and made this music video for ‘Still’, a first for both of them:
