Our Song of the Day featured on a 2007 album release titled Migrating Bird: The Songs of Lal Waterson which was a great tribute to Lal, you just need to look at the lineup to appreciate how influential she was which included King Creosote, Nancy Elizabeth, James Yorkston, Alasdair Roberts, Michael Hurley, Jeb Loy Nichols, Adrian Crowley, Willard Grant Conspiracy and many more. The track I’ve chosen is by another favourite who we’ve featured many times, this is To Make You Stay by The Memory Band featuring the lovely vocals of Nancy Wallace:
Migrating Bird: The Songs of Lal Waterson was released on Honest Jon’s Records
‘Keeps alive the thoughtful, rebellious, radical Englishness found in the best folk music… Nineteen different voices from different decades, countries, traditions and concerns, but the solitary, alienated quality of Waterson’s bleak, fearless songs ensures a mesmerising consistency. Buy this as your folk album of the year, not least because the music seems so contemporary and timeless that it could easily get away with not being called folk’ (The Observer).
A lovely demo recording of To Make You Stay features on the new Lal Waterson album ‘teach me to be a summer’s morning’ which is one of our Albums of the Month. Read our review and listen to it here
