Our Song of the Day is from Maz O’Connor‘s forthcoming album This Willowed Light due out in Spring 2014. The song Derby Day was commissioned by Broadstairs Folk Week for a concert commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of suffragette Emily Wilding-Davison, who died attempting to attach a Votes For Women scarf to the bridle of the kings horse at the 1913 Epsom Derby. She is remembered as one of the most important figures of the Suffragette movement and commemorated with a plaque inside the House Of Commons broom cupboard in which she hid during the 1910 census. During her life she was imprisoned 9 times, and force-fed on 49 occasions.
Jim Moray who has produced the album which features a mix of original and traditional songs told Folk Radio UK “I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever worked on – I’m really excited about it”.
