John Burton, best known to many of us as Leafcutter John has been busy in his lab recently which we’ve been following on youtube. His latest LeafyLab venture involves a light controlled musical interface which he’s clearly excited about: “have a look here to see the newest incarnation replete with FM synthesised algorithmic rhythms!”
Whilst I’m at a loss in understanding this field of technical wizardry and FM synthesised algorithmic rhythms it does mean he no longer needs to touch the computer whilst performing. This is an important step as it means he can better engage with his audience rather than hiding behind a screen…a more pleasing visual performance. Whilst I know him more for his earlier electro-acoustic folk hybrid music his creativity with sound is playful in the most wonderful way. He still approaches it with a childlike fascination that is always both inspiring and a pleasure to behold, just watch the second video below during which he talks about his sound creations and demonstrates with a performance.

He has a number of gigs coming up this month including a free gig at Cafe Oto (for Jazz on 3 BBC radio) where he’ll be returning on 26th Nov along with the first outing for his new light controlled instrument. He also has a workshop in Hoxton and will also be performing in Berlin with Talvin Singh and others.
