Aidan O’Rourke brings his ambitious, magical Hotline (previous FRUK Album of the Month) into the live arena for two rare Scottish shows on 17th and 18th October (details below).
Billed as the Aidan O’Rourke Quintet, it’s the same musical line up as for the CD Hotline, with Aidan O’Rourke – Fiddle, Catriona McKay – Harp, Phil Bancroft – Sax, Paul Harrison – Piano and synths and Martin O’Neill – Bodhran and percussion.
We ran an exclusive interview with Aidan back in June and he explained how the project had come together out of the cultural Olympiad, inspired by his memories of the first international, Transatlantic Telephone cable, TAT1, that ran from his native Argyle coast to Newfoundland. You can read it in full here.
I’ve been privileged to see the work performed live, when the Quintet supported The Imagined Village at London’s QEH. Blending folk and jazz skills, with Aidan’s gift for melody it’s a mightily impressive piece of work. The live arena also affords a little licence to expand the improvisational element, but however it is played the calibre of those involved makes this one not to miss. Given the other commitments of Aidan and the other musicians, opportunities for live performance of Hotline are limited, so make that a double bubble for un-missable.
