Anyone unfamilar with the German trio The Durian Brothers consisting of Stefan Schwander, Mark Matter and Florian Meyer may well be fooled into thinking they know what’s happening in the video below. As the crowd dance to the polyrythmic rhythms you may be forgiven for thinking they’re mid-way through mixing a minimalist version of Konono No.1’s avant-rock from Kinshasa, Congo. This is turntablism of a very different kind, the two spinning decks are not carrying vinyl they are prepared with post-it notes, wire and all manner of things which are striking tuned elastic bands as it turns creating that thumb piano sound with Stefan Schwander working in various effects to their very experimental approach. They released a split 12″ on FatCat with Ensemble Skalectrik (aka Ekoplekz) who also make use of the record deck as source material (available on FatCat here).
The Durian Brothers will be performing their first ever UK show this coming Saturday 28 Sep as part of Unsound London which leads up to the mighty Unsound Krakow, Poland. The evening promises to offer a wide eclectic mix including a headline performance from FOREST SWORDS who took the electronic music world by storm with his 2010 LP “Dagger Paths”. He will be performing material from the debut LP, Engravings (Aug 26 2013 through Tri Angle Records):
The evening will culminate in a performance from Robert Piotrowicz, one of Poland’s best known experimental musicians and also marks the launch of his new album “Lincoln Sea”.
