10) King Of Kings

When I was young, there was one school summer holiday when I decided to try to cycle down every road on the a-z map of the area where I lived. When I’d been down a road, I’d mark it off with a yellow highlighter. This song is about being young and thinking things will never end, and the other part of the song is about a fallen statue of Ramesses I had seen in Egypt, which may or may not have been the inspiration for Shelley’s poem ‘Ozymandias’. If you don’t know the poem have a read and it’ll make sense I hope, it’s a fantastic poem. And Ozymandias in turn, reminds me of a chapter in my favourite book as a child ‘The Tripods’ by John Christopher. The ‘Dreams and Soaring Schemes’ line is a Boo Radleys reference, another thing that makes me thing of long summers and being young.
11) Last Stand

I’ll come clean and admit that this song is basically inspired by the book ‘The Stand’ by Stephen King. It’s written from the point of view of the person who accidentally releases a terrible virus into the world, but who manages to survive it themselves. There’s a few other sci-fi book references throughout the album too – the main one being the title ‘Only Forward’ inspired by the book of the same name by Michael Marshall Smith, which I can’t recommend reading enough.
12) Mono

The final track on our album is a song about moving on. It’s about the dislocated feeling you have when you move home, or your plans suddenly change, and you find yourself pacing around in your quiet house, or wasting time finding tasks that you don’t really need to do. It’s one of the oldest songs we wrote, and up until our album launch (where we’ll play the whole album through) has only been performed once, at our very first gig.
