3) Stars Are Ripe
Stars Are Ripe is inspired by the story of an American systems ecology scientist called George Van Dyne. George was the first director of the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory in the USA, and until his death in 1981 he worked to develop a mathematical model of the ecosystems of the grassland where he lived – measuring carefully what the animals there ate and what came back out, the plants that grew, rainfall and so on. He was convinced that the whole ecosystem could be modeled on a computer in this way, if enough data was taken, but whatever he did the numbers wouldn’t add up. The project struggled, the researchers argued and eventually Van Dyne died of a heart attack.
4) Stare Out To Sea
Ever since staring up at the statue now housed in the British Museum, I’ve been pretty fascinated by the Moai statues on Easter Island. No one really knows why they were built, even though the effort of building the hundreds of them all over the island almost caused the end of the people there. All of the known Moai on the island face inland, apart from the seven statues at Ahu Akivi, which stare out to sea.
