Hold on Magnolia is a great song that Darren Hanlon covered on Weary Engine Blues, a collection of Jason Molina’s songs from his Songs: Ohia, Magnolia Electric Company, solo and Amalgamated Sons of Rest records. This is just one of many great tracks (36 in total) from that album performed by artists who are fans of his work including Mark Kozelek, Scoutt Niblett, Damien Jurado, Alasdair Roberts and many more.
Hanlon’s cover has a brighter sparkle which gives it that extra lift over the original but it is as stripped back as you can get, not surprising for a man who walks the streets with empty notebooks.
“I find buying note books more inspiring than writing in them. They’re just so perfect and pure, like a blank canvas or unflavoured tofu. I don’t want to ruin it by writing in them.”
He applies the same logic / sentiment to this song:
