Welsh folk band Fernhill begin their UK tour today which kicks off at The Met in Bury. The tour will also see them play at St Davids hall in Cardiff as part of their Roots unearthed series which will feature Martin Simpson in September and Eliza Carthy & Tim Eriksen in October (detail here). The tour will culminate in a performance on 18th August at this year’s Greenman Festival.
For those unfamiliar with Fernhill the main band consists of:
tomos williams-trumpet, flugelhorn. corn
christine cooper-fiddle, voice. ffidil, llais
julie murphy-voice, sruti. llais, sruti (read our interview with Julie)
ceri rhys matthews-guitar, flute, voice. gitar, ffliwt, llais (read Ceri’s wonderful journey log for ‘Rambles Through Tunes’ which he undertook with Christine Cooper)
They are without doubt one of my all-time favourite bands, just listen to their last album canu rhydd which we reviewed here. There is an intimacy to their music that transcends genre boundaries, it’s simpley unique and incredibly beautiful.
