The latest Simple Folk Radio show is presented by Dillon and features special guest host JEFFREY LEWIS playing his favourite records of all time!
“The best lyricist working in the US today.” – Jarvis Cocker (Pulp)
“Jeffrey is the only artist I’ve sent fan mail to.” – Jens Lekman
“Hands down my favorite contemporary songwriter” – Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie)
“Impressive and inspiring and exciting… There’s not a lot of people that can tell a story and use language like that in music.” – Will Oldham
Jeffrey Lewis is arguably this generations Bob Dylan, a politically charged and highly insightful poet who, as the quotes above make clear, has left his contemporaries in rapture. Rising to prominence as part of the Anti-Folk scene in New York’s Lower East Side, Jeffrey Lewis, along with the likes of The Moldy Peaches (Kimya Dawson & Adam Green), Herman Dune, Turner Cody and Toby Goodshank took to subverting folk music using their punk, DIY approach to their art. He was signed by London record label Rough Trade back in 2001 and has went on to release six critically acclaimed albums including an album of Crass covers, along with performing or touring with such luminaries as Daniel Johnston, The Fall, British Sea Power, Roky Erickson, The Mountain Goats, Jarvis Cocker and Super Fury Animals.
Jeffrey Lewis and his band were one of the first ever groups who agreed to a session with us way back 2006 when Simple Folk Radio was a completely unheard of show, broadcasting once a month, late at night on a small community station in Brighton. Over the years their is one thing that has always stood out about him, he’s truly is one of the good guys. He stands up for the little people, the support band who wasn’t going to be paid by the promoter, the fan who can’t get into a venue because of some crumby reason, you get the idea. This might not sound like much, but in my opinion this goes a long way to showing the cut of his cloth.
So yes, after countless sessions with us over the years Jeffrey Lewis will be actually hosting his own episode of Simple Folk Radio, and we felt it only right to give him complete freedom over his music selection so he can share with us his favourite records of all time.
