With their new album ‘Carrier’ due out on 27th August San Francisco’s The Dodos dropped their fist taster of what’s to come with their single ‘Confidence‘ which is released today. With the unexpected passing of guitarist Chris Reimer guitarist Meric Long and drummer Logan Kroeber went through a reassessment of not just their sound but also Long’s songwriting.
“Chris was a huge influence on the way I think about guitar, songwriting, and music in general,” reveals Long. “Seeing how he could transform and shape sound with an electric guitar inspired me to explore more tones and use those tones to begin writing a song.”
Whilst one single track may not be the revelation of what’s to come ‘Confidence’ does sound as though it’s a new mark of approach, one that is very self-assured, considered yet organic and packing a huge punch of freedom and certainty! The track builds from a slow burning first half with musically sympathetic lyrics “my mind is still, my body empty”…this soon breaks to a wave like crescendo of guitar which forges rather than fights ahead…the title couldn’t be more apt.
