On this week’s Simple Folk Radio Dillon will be joined by guest co-presenter Ro Cemm (End Of The Road/Oh! Canada) and they will be featuring a live recording of Dan Mangan in session.
“He sings with the soul of Woody Guthrie – if Woody Guthrie had listened to Godspeed (You Black Emperor)” -NME
More from Dillon on Dan Mangan:
As I sit here typing, I’m listening to this weeks special feature, a live recording of Dan Mangan performing with his full band. To be specific, I’m listening to Dan & his band cover a mutual favourite song, Waltz #2 by Elliott Smith, and he’s nailing it. He’s covering Elliott better than anyone I’ve ever heard. Ten minutes ago his music had me dancing around my living room, punching the air as the sound of a trumpet erupted from my speakers, and now he’s singing this. I can’t stress this enough, Dan Mangan is awesome. Originally more of a singer-songwriter, then an indie-folkster, his music has evolved over the course of his three critically acclaimed albums into so much more.
Drawing inspiration from the likes of Godspeed (You Black Emperor), his sound has become full bodied, packing more weight behind its punch whilst still remaining decidedly pop, still dropping catchy choruses that have audiences singing along word-for-word, wherever he performs.
Why he is not a household name is beyond me. He has a list of accolades as long as your arm. Only recently he was awarded three Juno Awards (Canadian equivalent to Mercury Prize) for New Artist of the Year, Alternative Album of the Year and Video of the Year (and was also nominated for Songwriter of the Year). His songs are catchy, honest and heart felt. Not only that he has that certain something that instantly convinces you that he’s one of the good guys, he’s in your corner, he’s on your side.
To reiterate, summarise, hammer home the lesson of the day, I think Dan Mangan is awesome. If you listen to his songs, you might just find yourself telling a friend the very same thing.
