Song number five is almost the fulcrum of the album as we reach and tip beyond the half way point of the nine track album. As the centre piece it’s also perhaps appropriately the only traditional song on the album. Chris has picked a good one too and The Little Carpenter fits the everyman agenda of the album to a tee. It also picks up the tender heart of the track from two weeks ago, where true love is once again on the agenda. But make no mistake this 1-0 to the good guys.
Chris is once again succinct, but probably says all that needs to be said, giving a little clue to his musical preference too saying, “This is the only trad song on the album. I just love songs in 5/4 so, I made it into one.” As if to emphasise the sweetness of the ultimate victory for the underdog he adds, “In the face of several more lucrative offers she holds out for her penniless little tradesman.” And with a final flourish he reveals, “Sung with feeling.”
Having listened to it, don’t you know that’s the truth?
