Sarah Gillespie was brought up in Norfolk, England to an American mother and British father. Frequent trips to Minnesota supplemented her musical influences with jazz and blues and a keen ear and a natural gift led to her composing her first music on piano at the age of 4. She moved to the US at 18 and began busking and playing gigs. She writes songs that use a streetwise lyricism and a clever witticism that gives them an enduring influence.
“When he waves at the waitress with fine hips, I tell you, he wanted much more than the dessert menu”
Her talents don’t stop there she has also written a number of articles, poetry and has a passion for abstract expressionism that has seen her paintings exhibited in London and the US.
It was whilst supporting Ian Dury’s Blockheads that she met saxophonist and composer Gilad Atzmon who is also a novelist, political activist and writer. A strong connection was formed and Atzmon went on to produce Sarah’s critically acclaimed albums Stalking Juliet (2009), In The Current Climate (2011), her anti-war narrative suite The War on Trevor (2012) and her latest album Glory Days.
Sarah will be debuting material from her new album at Square Chapel on Thursday 18 April at 8pm.
