Record Store Day is fast approaching (20th April) and things are looking good with Jack White already appointed as this year’s ambassador, a fitting appointment for the legendary artist and Third Man Records founder. As always there will be plenty of exclusives available on the day which will be keeping the independent distributors very busy. One release which caught our attention was the 10″ EP release from Dark Dark Dark who released their last album ‘Who Needs Who‘ back in October last year. The band will be releasing a three-track EP featuring tracks from the ‘Who Needs Who’ recording sessions that they’ve held back for a special occasion.
The tracks have a certain poignance for the band as they were recorded in the aftermath of a relationship breakdown between band co-founders Marshall LaCount and Nona Marie Invie, each song remains as personal as the work you’ll hear on the LP, but finds small departures to explore. As a taster you can hear ‘What I Needed’ below, Nona’s vocals recalling classic cuts from The Shangri-Las, her coy choir behind her nailing the perfect 1960s sound. With a sweeping romantic melody and chilling vocals still present and correct, it reminds us what makes the Minneapolis quintet so exceptional. The other two tracks are ‘Love Lies’ and ‘I Collect Things’.
