The first track from the album and the title track sets up the album None The Wiser perfectly. If you’ve already watched the EPK, you’ll recognise the elements that Chris describes and if you haven’t, the guitar here is the signature sound from which the album grew. Also present is that baritone grittiness. Then there’s a woozy, rambling melody that seems to hint at things just barely in control. In typical style the song hits the bulls-eye of some big targets, while retaining a compassionate feel for the dislocated everyman.
In Chris’ own words: “There is nothing in the song that didn’t happen, nothing I didn’t see or hear, whilst on that tour with Joan Armatrading. Those who know me know I have long loved “Country” music. I have never actually written a song with what we call a “Bim Bom” bassline but as the couplets started turning up on the page and I was sleeping on the tour bus this just seemed like a song of the road and so I seized the chance to give the Epiphone a bit of an outing and write myself a road song.”
The quite murmuring that has heralded the arrival of the advanced audio samples is that this is Chris’ best yet. We’ll add our vote to that and recommend, insist even, that you come back next week for track two. If this one has caught your fancy, just you wait…
