Folk Radio UK favourites Marry Waterson & Oliver Knight have released a new video for their single ‘Gormandizer‘ which we are able to reveal to you exclusively today. Taken from their album Hidden (read our review and interview here) Marry has put to good use her artistic skills again with the use of stop-motion photogrpahy, some biscuits, teapots, dolls and a great imagination! There’s a great psychedelic spin to this one which we enjoyed and we also came away feeling a bit peckish by the end!
The new single, ‘Gormandizer’ will be released on 11th March 2013, on the same day they appear in a special double feature headline show with Eliza Carthy, Bella Hardy, Lucy Farrell & Kate Young (Read our Laylam review here) at Kings Place, London as part of the Hidden Treasure’ series of shows:
The Kings Place show brings Mercury Award-nominated (cousin) Eliza Carty, one of the most impressive and engaging performers of her generation, together with three other fine fiddle singers in an all-female folk supergroup. Bella Hardy’s captivating voice spins her stories with a balance of strength and sensitivity. Lucy Farrell, a double Folk Award nominee, has sprung to prominence through her work with Jonny Kearney and the Emily Portman Trio. Kate Young is Scotland’s rising folk pioneer, conveying traditional and world music with an intoxicating passion and drive.
Differing markedly from the very personally felt themes of their debut, Marry & Oliver’s new album, ‘Hidden’ finds expression through the vivid characters and stories inhabiting its 11 songs. ‘Gormandiser’s difficult subject matter concerns a character who hides her truth behind food – the song personified by its musical style and tone.
“I realized pretty early on that I was writing about many different characters” explains Marry, “but all with similar traits – concealment, deception and avoidance.” Musically too, it is a more diverse set than its predecessor with forays into ragtime, music hall – even ska, as well as the more traditional folk styles that one might associate with the pair.
