Eric San, known to most as Kid Koala was the first North American artist to sign to the UK label Ninja Tune…that was back in 1996. After a string of remix releases and tours with fellow label mates Coldcut, DJ Food and DJ Vadim he began to receive more attention for his skill, innovation, and performance style. This led to some big breaks: in 1998, he was invited to join Money Mark’s band, and then went on the road to open for the Beastie Boys on their ‘Hello Nasty’ world tour. In 2000, Ninja Tune released Kid Koala’s debut album ‘Carpal Tunnel Syndrome’, which received international praise by the press for having defied expectation.
He released 12 Bit Blues in September last year (you can stream it below) which was supported by his Vinyl Vaudeville Tour. Now with Vinyl Vaudeville Tour 2.0 he is heading to the UK with the promise of the silliest show on earth with dancing girls, dancing robots, giant cardboard turntables and ‘bigger’ puppets!
The London, Scala show will be followed by an afterparty featuring turntablists and djs playing party music until the small hours. So that’s Friday night sorted then!
As usual, the Kid delivers, with a sweetness of outlook and genuine silliness which is hard not to love. But at root, the show is about nothing more than the incredible musicianship of Eric San.
So come for the fun and silliness, or come for the music, or come for both, but come. It may look like Kid Koala is messing around, but this is a serious musician.
