Back in 2006 a fantastic album compilation came out called Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Sons and Chanteys. It was packed with sea shanties being covered by the likes of Richard Thompson, Baby Gramps, Nick Cave, Bill Frisell, Eliza Carthy, Martin Carthy and the UK Group, Akron/Family and heaps more, we had a field day playing it on Folk Radio UK. It was born in the mind of film director Gore Verbinski and enhanced by the actor Johnny Depp. They were filming “Pirates of the Caribbean II” and very much ensconced in a lot of pirate culture and songs of the time. The good news is it’s back!
Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys. It will be released on Anti-Records February 19 as a double CD again and will feature the likes of Tom Waits, Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Patti Smith, Sean Lennon, Shane McGowan many more. The New York Times called the last release “a strong album with heart as well as ideas” and Entertainment Weekly hailing it as “a revelatory folk-song collection with the sea in the leading role.”
Here’s a small taster with Shane McGowan covering ‘Leaving of Liverpool’:
