This week’s Nest Collective Hour features some special guests: Jamie Doe of The Magic Lantern and Ballina Whalers, singing songs from both projects in advance of The Ballina Whalers EP launch on the 7th Dec. The show also features songs from Emily Portman, Lisa Knapp, Super Best Friends Club, Lau, Sufjan Stevens, Pete Roe and Josienne Clarke.
The Ballina Whalers
The Ballina Whalers are Pete Truin, Jamie Doe and Sam Brookes (listen to his recent Folk Radio UK Session) – three musical barnacles clinging to the creaking hull of a musical tradition stretching back over hundreds of years. Using just their voices they explore ballads, shanties and seafaring songs that tell tales of whaling ships, lost loves, roaring storms and hardship out at sea.
The last few years have been extremely busy one for the boys, seeing them playing folk clubs, harbor sides, beaches, boat sheds and festivals up and down the country. Feeling the pull of the great unknown, they spent the summer of ’11 walking the coast of Wales collecting folk songs and sharing their knowledge and repertoire of the sea. They have just returned from a triumphal time at the International Sea Shanty Festival in Appingedam, Holland.
Their debut EP, ‘Lowlands’ is set for its UK release on the Hectic Eclectic record label and we’re thrilled to be hosting this special night for them as they unleash ‘Lowlands’ into the grasp of humankind. Don’t miss it for the world.
EP Launch: Friday 7 December @ St Mark’s Church Hall, London (details and tickets)
