Watch the video for ‘Joanna’ from Deaf Joe’s debut album, Burrowings which was released February of this year on Dublin’s Delphi Label.
Deaf Joe writes folk songs: sometimes romantic, sometimes dreamlike, always cathartic. Joe is a prolific writer and performer and scores for contemporary dance and theatre productions across his native Ireland. He also sometimes plays live with fellow Irish artist Katie Kim.
‘Joanna’, the closing song on the album, is a textured, ambient “very modern love song” and the video by Paul Hallahan mirrors the song’s ode to release from anger and frustration, instead embracing a better space that, as says the closing line can, ‘…save a lot of heart from getting lost out in the dark’.
Think Bon Iver’s recent forays into soulful studio experimentation with the heart and directness of a piano based John Lennon composition.
‘Like a rising mist emerging from the leaves of a black wood, singer-songwriter Deaf Joe’s Burrowings has a haunting beauty.’ – state.ie
“Deaf Joe’s dreamy, dark lullabies based around piano and guitar aren’t exactly your average Saturday night soundtrack, but these fragile, spirited songs are things of real beauty” – Irish Times
