Some of you may have already picked up through the grapevine that The Magic Lantern, a band we frequently covered in articles, played their last full band line-up at Cambridge Folk Festival this year. The band which began life with Jamie Doe playing songs on his own to friends grew over time, as these things often do, into a bigger band and a pretty unique band at that featuring some great musicians as well as Fred Thomas who we interviewed earlier this year whose arrangements came to define the sound of the band.
But it is not the end…Jamie has announced this today in their newsletter:
…in taking some time to think about the direction I want to take the new songs in, I realised that what I want to get back to is the emotional intensity and directness of playing them on my own – simply, honestly and I hope, beautifully. So going forward, The Magic Lantern will be me playing solo but leaving open the possiblity of collaborating with different artists and musicians. I hope you will enjoy the new solo direction and can’t wait to play for you all.
So to mark the rebirth, a new website is now up and running where you’ll be able to keep up with the latest new developments one of which is a new tour:
I will going on a small UK tour with good friend and fellow Hectic Eclectic songsmith, Facometer. We’ve decided to name it the ‘Any Path Will Do’ tour and we will be on the road (or more precisely the train as we are car-less for this tour) from the 6-15 November. We’re still looking for a gig somewhere on the 12th November so if you have any ideas or would like to host a gig at your house even, please let us know!
Tour dates at the end of this article.
