The Pond are Kathryn Williams and fellow musicians, Simon Edwards and Ginny Clee, a project that finds Kathryn and her co-conspirators in a highly creative phase drawing on a mass of vintage influences, loops, as well as featuring rapper ‘Kirsch’ on the track ‘Bebop’ (free download below).
The mood of the album runs from sunny and laid back but some songs leave a surprising impression of darkness. There is nothing in Kathryn’s catalogue to prepare one for the bleak, eerie strangeness of ‘End Of The Pier’, the foreboding notes and lyric of ‘Memory Let Down’ or the sparkling, mysterious possesion of ‘The River’ – or much else here. Comparisons may be drawn with down-tempo artists like Lemon Jelly, Mint Royale and Bent, but The Pond’s strong emphasis is on songs and voices – the interaction between Kathryn & Ginny creating some intoxicating harmonies.
This project has been incubating for two years, catching time where possible to head back into Simon & Ginny’s home studio in North London. Thanks to modern technology they’ve also made good use of collaborating by email to come up with the 11 tracks that make up the album which was mixed Adrian Utley.
The Pond head out on tour in October, see dates below.
