Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker’s latest EP ‘Homemade Heartache‘ sees them at their most confident sounding to date. Josienne returns with some of her most beautifully self-penned songs to date on which Ben brings fuller and brighter arrangements making this EP an incredibly rewarding listen.
Arrangements slip from the Spanish influenced guitar on ‘Every Tear Means Change‘ to a surprisingly rootsy and celebratory opener ‘Just Travelling‘ that get’s that lovely spark from the addition of Ben’s mandolin and Basia (Barbara) Bartz’s Violin which lifts Joseinne’s vocals right out of the speakers.
This EP brims with the confidence of a duo who are building on their well deserved critical acclaim that has followed them since they released their 2010 debut ‘One Light is Gone‘. Whilst their last album The Seas Are Deep featured some great favourite folk songs from the likes Silver Dagger and My Donal this EP feels like they are tapping another seam in their musical inventory that demonstrates the breadth of their talents more than ever before.
Homemade Heartache offers a whole new angle to this duo who sound like they are really coming into their own, their most brilliant to date. A classic duo for the future and one of the best I’ve heard this year! Brilliant!
