The fabulous Blowzabella who take their name from an English jig tune are a worthy free-wheeling instituton of today, with their seed sown in 1978 their path to the sun has been unlike any other, theirs is one that has been nurtured and allowed to trail unhurried across time, the true alternative, unlike the fast-food genre tags spawned without thought today. They performed at fringe festivals and took their performances to the streets that in turn brought together a magical variety of kindred souls from “street theatre…improvised music, new circus, free poets…pagans, bikers, locals and people of all ages.”
Their roots make today’s modern bands look tame by comparison. Consider their origins in their London-based Whitechapel run-down tenement block rehearsing and instrument making to their 150 gigs a year in and around Europe…they have followed a strong independent and self-sufficient standard that has been backed up by their power-house performances. The current line-up features Andy Cutting, Jo Freya, Paul James, Gregory Jolivet, David Shepherd, Barn Stradling and Jon Swayne.
It will come as no surprise to the familiar acolytes that they’re off to France, having frequented the place since their origins which then drew them to a small village called Saint Chartier where they felt at home amongst the bagpipes, hurdy-gurdys, accordions and all night parties.
If you’re new to teir music then here’s a very small taster of their greateness:
