We have a very special show this week from the folk at Simple Folk Radio. The show will be presented by Dillon & Johny Lamb (Thirty Pounds Of Bone).
They have a great session in store: featuring THIRTY POUNNDS OF BONE performing The Ships Log from The Boat Project. First Broadcast will be Sunday 26th August 2012.
Part of the Cultural Olympiad, The Boat Project is a living archive of people’s stories and lives, a 30ft vessel made from donated wooden items ranging from children’s toys to a fragment of a guitar played by Jimi Hendrix. The public donated their wood to the project but not just any old wood. Pencil or piano – exotic as Zebrawood or as familiar as pine every piece had a story behind it. Donations arrived in their thousands, from the highly personal to pieces of national importance. All of these donations have now been used to build a state-of-the-art seafaring yacht named Collective Spirit.
On it’s maiden voyage around the south coast from Hayling Island to Weymouth, capturing day-to-day life on board the boat was the job of Thirty Pounds of Bone – the much celebrated alt-folk project of Johny Lamb.
Giving his last album four stars Mojo magazine called the collection ‘An exquisite index of gin-soaked desolation… Lamb sings like a man unable to see beyond keeping a stiff upper lip to the end of the song. Even if he manages it, you might not.’
Working on board the boat, Johny wrote a song during each leg of voyage and performed it live with local musicians at each of the five stop-off locations. A unique series of gigs, featuring some of the South East’s most renowned musicians, the Ship’s Log proved to be a unique document of life on board an equally unique boat.
