Cameron J Niven is a fairly new artist to the London folk scene. In his early 20’s he only started gigging in London last year but after hearing this session I think you’ll agree he has a great talent. We caught up with Cameron prior to the session which was recorded by award wining guitarist Ben Walker.
“It’s been a strange experience, playing alone and I never really found any purpose in playing live until I found venues like the Folkroom & The Lantern society. That sense of community is what I love about live music; you meet big characters, hear big stories and have a big time. I find the Lantern Society a very humbling experience too; last time I was there I heard a guy called Felix Holt and he blew my mind.”
“I grew up on my dad and mums collection of tapes and occasionally a bit of vinyl, which were mostly blues and French folk records. I suppose my musical diet is much the same these days, I like to think my guitar is influenced by John Martyn, M Ward, Jackson C Frank and Davy Graham although, being self-taught, to reach that level of mastery is still only a dream. I’m also a big fan of soul and early works of Tom Waits (the Asylum days).”
