Louisiana Sun is the second album from the union of two unlikely bands: Mama Rosin / Hipbone Slim & The Knee Tremblers. Whilst the band titles are enough to draw attention from most it’s their musical combination that make this album standout. We gave you a flavour of Mama Rosin back in June follwing the announcement that they are to support Bellowhead on tour. This oh so authentic sounding cajun collective are in fact from Switzerland. So it shouldn’t suprise you to hear that Hipbone Slim & The Knee Tremblers who are signed to Voodoo Rhythm Records and who take a leaf from, amongst others, rockabilly, blues, garage, surf and a healthy spoonful of Bo Diddley hail from London.
Hipbone Slim & The Knee Tremblers are led by the unforgettably titled Sir Bald Diddley who also runs a label called an equally hair challenging: Alopecia Records. The unlikely combo first met at a Voodoo Rhythmn jam in France during a blues fest.
The results of this second coming on Louisiana Sun speak for themselves, there is a meeting of kind as they roll away the stone for some rebel rousing. Their unique sound works well and evolved well before the current trend of retro inspired music. It has a homegrown feel that sees the bands indulging each other’s roots as though they’ve been doing it for years. Mama Rosin’s cajun punk infuence is stronger on some tracks than others which I’ll admit I’m biased towards making ‘London Zydeco’ the standout track for me but there is no getting away from the fact that they work really well together. Recording it must have been a party, but I’d put money on them being a mightier deal live!
