Further to our earlier article about Doc Watson’s death, I put this new mix together that celebrates Doc Watson and the music of the mountains as a celebration of the music and the people.
Some tracks were recorded live, and many are from the Appalachian region. There are some lesser-known tracks that many may not have heard before, such as those recorded during the 37th Old Time Fiddler’s Convention at Union Grove, North Carolina, which were recorded in 1961 by Mike Seeger (The Brushy Mountain Boys / Red Parham and the Haywood County Ramblers) as well as Roscoe Holcomb (1912 – 1981) and Vester Jones of Grayson County, Virginia. Many can be found on Smithsonian Folkways. Others were influenced by Doc Watson or the music from the Appalachian region, such as Martin Simpson, Sam Amidon and Tim Eriksen.
