The Forgotten Works have a unique sound that has a timeless quality and a familiarity, a feeling of belonging to the land, reminiscent of those early explorations into psych-folk. James Chapman (guitar) and Martin Beer (double bass) form the backbone of the band; they are joined by other friends on vocals, fiddle and harmonium for this, their first album: You Might Get Lost.
The album opens to the slightly haunting Oxwich Bay which has a folkoric quality with the repeated verses of Winter, summer by the sea, Take my hand lead me out to sea. There is both simplicity of structure and depth to their lyrics, a trademark throughout this album, no song is over-burdened with words, each is a considered offering of bare bones that makes them glitter all the more:
Find my weepings
And no-sleepings
Float them down the Tay
Guest artists feature on the album including Gareth Dickson whom we featured back in 2010 (read our review). The Forgotten Works occupy a space removed from the everyday stress and strains of life…it’s a great place to escape to and very beautiful album. Fans of James Yorkston and the Big Eyes Family Players will love this album.
You Might Get Lost is available as a CD and various download formats.
