Maia have been clearly honing their sound since the release of their self-titled debut album on Vandal Records in 2010. Since then they have played Cambridge Folk Festival (2011), led a residency at the monthly Folke Newington night at The Drop as well as becoming firm favourites with the highly regarded London based Nest Collective. The climax of 2011 came with a headline show at The Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre!
They have been filling their gig diaries and making a name for themselves supporting Anais Mitchell, The Hut People, Jamie Smith’s Mabon and Chumbawamba as well as performing at The Unthanks end of tour party.
Their latest Living in the Alligator EP carries a lot of weight. If this new EP proves anything, it is that they have a heap of potential and 2012 will no doubt be a good year for them. Living in Alligator is a hook laden delight with tight slick arrangements and the b-side ‘Constant Play‘ has a great Beirut inspired brass theme that goes down a treat.
Despite walking in the London folk limelight it’s good to hear that Maia are still progressing their sound and experimenting; their tongue in cheek description ‘disco sci-fi folk pop’ will no doubt continue to grow in words. Their second album is going through the final touches and we’re really looking forward to hearing more so watch this space!
