The psychedelic collective Brian Jonestown Massacre have a new album out on 30th April with the German title Aufheben. The title appears to have several meanings (not that surprising for Anton Newcombe) some are contradictory: I turned to wikipedia for some enlightenment:
The term has also been defined as “abolish,” “preserve,” and “transcend.” In philosophy, aufheben is used by Hegel to explain what happens when a thesis and antithesis interact, particularly via the term “sublate.”
I was none the wiser…I’ll leave you to ponder on that one…the album was recorded in Berlin in Anton Newcombe’s studio & the infamous East German Radio Station “Studio East”. The album features Matt Hollywood an original member of the band, Will Carruthers (Spacemen 3, Spritualized), Constatine Karlis (Dimmer), & Thibault Pesenti (Rockcandys)plus vocal performances by Eliza Karmasalo (in Finnish).
The bands music has always been genre spanning from psychedelia, electronica, folk music, blues, experimental music, and many others. This promises to be no less inventive with a heady mix of eastern influences to satisfy their cult following. This influence is nothing new, Jón Sæmundur Audarson of the Dead Skeletons has frequently collaborated with BJM front man Anton Newcombe and Jón’s last album Dead Magick had more than a little dose of Tibetan mysticism which Anton rode alongside on (video below).
