Performing to a packed out cozy Soho bar room yesterday [Monday] lunchtime, Canadian musician Patrick Watson treated those gathered to a short set of stripped down songs from his new LP Adventures in Your Own Backyard, set for release on 30th April.
A pleasant start to a Monday lunchtime the set of five songs took a more intimate formation than the versions which are performed with a full band on record, but Patrick fleshed these out with jovial chit chat; giving little back stories to certain of the selection. One which he tells us comes as inspiration from a poem he found tucked in the back of a cookbook his mother gave him.
After five years on the road with his three-piece band, and touring on the back of two critically-acclaimed albums Watson set his sights on “mak[ing] the kind of music [the band] would want to listen to at home”. And so this fourth full length album, and his third with his regular band is a more patient and confident musical exploration, still retaining the expressive and expansive sonic palate of his older work, yet at its core exploring a simpler scene and those things close to home.
Adventures… will be preceded by the single and video for the sweeping, elegant “Into Giants,” which is available for preview at www.patrickwatson.net.
