Yo-Yo Ma’s new album, The Goat Rodeo Sessions, (an aviation term referring to a high risk situation), was released last month to great critical acclaim. Despite being released on the Sony Classical label this isn’t strictly speaking a classical album but a fusion of styles that create a new chamber ensemble. Yo-Yo Ma is joined by bassist Edgar Meyer, mandolinist Chris Thile and fiddler Stuart Duncan.
Despite the strong bluegrass influence the pace is slowed by Yo-Yo Ma’s cello playing on tracks such as Attaboy and where Chris Thile is normally playing at break-neck speed things get slowed down to a more pleasant pace. The fiddle playing of Stuart Duncan has an almost scottish feel at times and the overall sound is more akin to the Transatlantic Sessions on which Stuart appeared in Series 4.
