Meg Baird, best known as a founding member of Espers, has released a new album titled Seasons on Earth. It’s been a long wait since she released her last album Dear Companion back in 2007, during which time she has contributed on other artist releases including Will Oldham (Ask Forgiveness, 2007), Sharon Van Etten (Epic, 2010) and Kurt Vile (Smoke Ring for My Halo, 2011).
Her fortitude as an artists lies in her ability to capture emotional depths in her music and this has not been lost on Seasons on Earth, she has been described by her European label Wichita as part wanderer, part flower, part assassin—moving stealthily from light to shadow and back again. On Seasons on Earth there is a clear shift to original songs against the covers heavy Dear Companion. Her new songs promise a poetic intimacy which will envelope the listener into her shrouded world:
At night, when the clouds and maidens go down
The fool and the fool come face to face
I feel it all from the main
We’re all the same
Beaten by the sun and rain
Even rain fills each cup the same
And when you see this fire burning again
It’s only all remainders here
And so the game?
It’s only mine to say and keep safeEven Rain
