Hailing from East London, Dark Captain (formerly known as Dark Captain Light Captain) unveil their follow-up to 2008’s Guardian and iTunes acclaimed debut ‘Miracle Kicker’.
Dead Legs & Alibis has a mysterious, melancholic feel about it. Craftily woven textures build upon an underlying enigmatic, slightly Asian influence, with string and horn sections. This, combined with the group’s soft dulcet vocal tone making it an ideal remedy for dealing with the looming winter season.
The 38-minute album moves along at a somewhat rapid pace. The ongoing regimental beat in tracks such as ‘Right Way Round’ and ‘Ex Detective’ carry the centre pieces of Dead Legs & Alibis in a buoyant and slightly similar fashion to each other.
However this regimental direction of the album is not in anyway an aggressive collection of tracks. Dead Legs & Alibis echoes Fleetwood Mac or Midlake as fellow contemporaries, while proclaiming their own individual, organic and quintessential English ambiance to their post rock / folk sound.
The string of tracks between the gorging synth ridden introduction are peaceful and melodic, while conversely the standout song ‘Flickering Light’ breathes further depth and energy into Dead Legs & Alibis with its compulsive climax. As a personal preference there is a desire for more of the pomp and clamour Dark Capitain display in this concluding track, illustrating as it does the deeper qualities of the band, however Dead Legs & Alibis will have many a listener spellbound and magically day dreaming for months to come.
