Anoushka Shankar, daughter of sitar legend Ravi Shankar, has unveiled her new album and project titled ‘Traveller’ which traces the gypsies’ journey from their homeland in Rajasthan to their final settlement in Spain. The link between the two cultures and their music is the focus of the project. Anoushka will be taking her all-star Indian and flamenco musicians on tour between 20 November – 5 December and if the album is anything to go by the live event will be magical.
Traveller is a mesmerising listening experience offering a rich concoction of exotic sounds and emotions. Anoushka Shankar was trained by her father and is now recognised as one of the leading exponents of the Indian sitar as well as being a highly challenged composer blending Indian classical tradition with a fusion of world sounds.
Previous albums gained high recognistion with a grammy nomination for Rise, with ‘Traveller’ she continues to push those boundaries and explore the fringes of traditions through a modern lens. The album feels uninhibited as she stretches and experiments wth a wider sweep of genres. The results are a highly polished album which maintains an elemental freeform feel that makes the album both stunningly exceptional and ambitious.
