Merrill Garbus of tuneyards keeps it in the fa-mi-ly in her latest single ‘Gangsta’ which features artwork from her sister Ruth Garbus. Nice to see that she is also supporting the vinyl push…Gangsta is is on 12″ yellow vinyl and features remixes by Ad Rock and Cut Chemist, plus a cappella and instrumental versions. It’s also available as a digital release. The new video for the second release from w h o k i l l was also made by Merrill and Ruth.
Since we have been on the road so much these days, I shot it mostly while we were on tour. It features scenes from our life on the road as well as some dancing by Bay Area friends.
The DIY ethic doesn’t stop there, in addition to a sister collaboration they have launched an Etsy Store! Etsy has traditionally be known as the home of DIY artists but the boundaries of what it represents have grown way beyond its initial concept to the point where it has been an anchor for many artists who get a kick from handing on that bespoke item. So you can expect records, posters, tote bags, cloth necklaces, and other handmade tune-yards items. Merrill had this to say about Etsy:
The folks at Etsy saw a link between what they do and what I do…I create loops live on stage, with my voice and drums, so every performance is a new kind of instant artwork. A weaving? Knitting? Painting? I’m not sure, but it has been fun to think of our music in visual terms.
