Who else could come out with a single titled ‘Quail & Dumplings’ and not receive a reaction of surprise? None other than the well whiskered Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. This is a digital-only single taken from the forthcoming Wolfroy Goes to Town album which will be released as an LP/CD very soon. In case you were thinking of waiting…the single does have the added bonus of having two non-LP tracks!
The title track has a rootsy new-country feel not dis-similar to some of the Picketline album ‘Funtown Comedown’. Track two, Black Ice Cream, is slowed down to a whisky soaked pace with some nice dobro and brushed percussion. The finale is a surprising Hawaiian medley titled ‘E Iesu/Maka’i No’. It was released by Darren Benitez back in 2008 and the first part translates as ‘It is well with my Soul’. I’m sure there is some themed jigsaw puzzle going on that will become clearer once the album is released! Needless to say there is a video, also with an Hawaiian theme and it features the lovely Nina Nastasia who works her vocal magic:
