London based Vadoinmessico’s latest single ‘Pepita, Queen of the Animals’ is due for release on September 19th on Outcaste/PIAS. The ever sunshiney sounds of the freak-folk band with members hailing from Mexico, Italy, Austria and the UK and whose name translates quite simply as “I am in Mexico”, now reside in Dalston, but it hasn’t all been sunny days and pleasant terrains.
WIth a neat following and plenty of interest from bloggers and journalists alike they set about recording their debut album at the original Shunt HQ, a feat short lived as their license was revoked. Then began the rehearsing in disused often illegal places, lugging equipment and instruments all over London; but a light at the end of the tunnel has brought them through to ‘Pepita, Queen of the Animals’ and an array of flattering comparisons to Beirut, Gogol Bordello and Animal Collective.
For Vadoinmessico however, bringing together their disparate nationalities and experiences, they are certainly a band with their own unique sound and style. Giorgio’s songwriting is draped in nostalgia and optimism, while the band that colour these stories draw on African rhythms, various stringed instrumental arrangements, and an intriguing layering and texturing of often the obscurest of instruments and sounds.
We’re pretty certain ‘Pepita, Queen of the Animals’ will receive a similar reception as that of their debut single ‘Curling Up Your Spine’, which was released back in May, and was featured on Huw Stephens’ Radio One show as well as XFM.
Head up to Dalston’s Empowering Church on September 2nd for the launch of their second single, and their first in a string of monthly music nights curated by the band.
