This should have been posted last week but a stay at Camp Bestival and little to no reception meant it was a no goer.
The incredible Karen Dalton singing “It Hurts Me Too“, originally made popular by Elmore James. From a French documentary filmed in NYC, 1969. Her fan base grew in size following her death in 1993 and the likes of Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom treated her like the mother of their music scene which was given the term freak-folk. Not the most endearing description or one I’ve completely gotten to grips with although we’ve featured a lot of the artists that have fallen under that label.
Continuing on from Karen I was reminded of this lovely duet: Matt Bauer & Dana Falconberry (main picture this week) – waiting for your shadow to fall.
You may have already heard London based Benjamin Folke Thomas who is a new addition to the Folk Radio UK playlist. Think Greenwich Village heydays. Lovely guitar work as well!
Benjamin Folke Thomas – Barbry Allen
A Laura Gibson classic, I love the experimental work she did with Ethan Rose but this video of her classic track Hand in Pockets is so warming…probably because it’s in a bookstore…a great place to hang out.
Laura Gibson – Hands In Pockets
This video was shot in Potugal in a beautiful street near Porto Cathedral. The track is A Little Time, taken from their latest album, Red Planet.
Probably ended up on this final video after hearing that The Unthanks were taking their show, The Unthanks Explore the Music of Robert Wyatt / Antony & The Johnsons on the road. After Wyatt was paralysed in 1973 he left his Matching Mole project to embark on a solo career which included a number of musicians such as Mike Oldfield and Ivor Cutler. For anyone who hasn’t yet experienced Ivor Cutler it is maybe time you should. So I’ll end on something a bit whacky!
Ivor Cutler – Lemonade
Free Tracks
A Free track this week are from Kelly Joe Phelps. A man whose music I first came across playing in the folk and blues basement of Ray’s Jazz on Shaftesbury Avenue, London…it’s gone now from that site but can be found around the corner in Foyles. Not quite the same but at least it’s still going.
